Big Bang 2017 Report
You climbed into your Campers and bundled into your Beetles by the thousand! As tents went up, flags got hoisted, campers got unpacked and the BBQS lit – that festival feeling was well and truly in the air. Whether you joined us for the racing, show cars, family entertainment or just a good knees up – Big Bang 2017 hosted an explosive, jam-packed weekend for all you VW lovers of all ages.
Throughout the weekend there was plenty of action both on and off the track to keep us entertained. Pinders Circus provided us with a dazzling and breath-taking performance in their show tent, whilst Cool Flo brought their team of outstanding Pro riders showcasing demos, along with a couple of stunning buses to accompany their BMX displays. Podzilla, our resident Monster Truck, was roaring around its enclosure, delighting kids and adults alike with jaw-dropping jumps and crushing power.
Friday was Peak Performance on the track. We saw a record breaking run from Evo Tune Performance Specialists in a Nissan GTR – 7.7637 @ 179.20mph! Not a VW, but impressive nonetheless!
Friday night in the marquee showcased Big Bang’s dance night with Funky Essex providing some banging beats for you all to party to. Over in Fuelers Bar, The Black Market Band kept us rocking and rolling all night, movin’ and a groovin’ to covers from classic rock and cool indie chic.
The Show Paddock on Saturday hosted the Rust & Rat competition. We saw an awesome array of styles and designs on display. This competition is always tough as it can prove to be instinctive and abstract. However, after many turns around the paddock, I’m sure you’ll agree, the winners were as follows:
Lunch break on the track showcased Santa Pod Raceway’s very own Marathon, The Human Powered Race! As ever, hundreds of you rocked up to the start line with some very vibrant and varied forms of human powered transport. Well done to all who completed the half mile; whether you ran, walked, rode, scootered or danced your way to the finish line - we salute you! The trophies went to the following Human Powered Race Champions:
We were very excited to welcome Oklahoma Willy – The Jet Bus to Big Bang 2017. Showcasing its debut performance on the track, this very cool, beautifully presented camper hit the strip with a cheer, keeping you guys on the bank warmed up! Joining the flame and thunder party, tearing up the raceway, we saw Martin Hill’s Fireforce 5 Jet Dragster run at a breath-taking 5.13 @ 296mph!
RWYB took centre stage Saturday morning seeing a varied and vibrant mix of VWs and VAG vehicles hitting the track with some very impressive ET’s. The results of the RWYB competition were as follows:
Class A – Air-Cooled Cars – Oly Whitehouse – VW Beetle – 12.7909 @ 105.19mph
Class B – Air-Cooled Vans – Brian Galpin – VW Split Bus – 14.7846 @ 93.90mph
Class C – Water-Cooled Cars – Paul Geary – VW Beetle Charge-Cooled – 13.3946 @ 103.13mph

Once the RWYB was finished, the drag racers hit the strip for the championship racing and there was a plethora of classes that kept us entertained throughout:
Winner: Clarke Hillyard – Runner Up: Lucas Daglish
Hopefully many of you were able to catch the unmistakable sights, sounds and smells of the Top Fuel Dragster across the weekend! We were pleased to welcome Kevin Chapman to the track whilst he began his Top Fuel licencing passes.
Thank you to everyone who came to Fuelers Bar to take part in the Big Bang Bring & Buy Auction. You will be pleased to know we raised a fantastic £500 for the charity SANDS – well done!
It was tribute Band extravaganza in the marquee Saturday night with The UK Beach Boys and Blues Brothers – The All New Blues and Soul Revue, taking to the stage. Shakin’ their tail feathers and wearing those signature sunglasses we boogied the night away with these cool customers, singing and dancing along to all the iconic tunes. The stage in Fuelers Bar welcomed Undivided – the ultimate boy band experience with signature dance moves and pop-tastic harmonies galore.
The Autoglym Show & Shine Competition on Sunday showcased an outstanding congregation of VWs; the show paddock saw all types of pristine and stunning automobiles of all shapes and sizes. Whether you were there to see the ultimate custom car, rare original or restored beauty – this impressive line-up of VWs had something for everyone making judging this year particularly hard! We salute all of you who entered – you did us proud! Well done to the winners of the following classes:
From beetles to buses, campers to caddies and golfs to ghias – Big Bang 2017 saw them all! We hope you enjoyed your weekend as much as we did and had a fun and action packed festival. Thank you to everyone who brought a VW along, especially the clubs and those of you who get involved with both on and off track competitions. Bug Jam isn’t far away so hopefully we will be seeing you all very soon on 21st – 23rd July 2017 for some summer time VW celebrations!
